New Year Resolution: A New Hobby, Instead of A New Habit

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterGoogle+Pin on PinterestEmail to someone

Happy New Year, you guys! You know what is harder than writing a blog post regularly? Writing it after a short break, which included a celebration, a hangover and holiday movie marathon. I am having a hard time to sit down, open the dashboard and start typing on a blank space, which is why this wish is almost two days late. Sorry for that, once again, Merry 2015!

Now, laid it out to me, what are your new year resolutions? Before 2014, I used to have a lot of it each year, so much so that if I had followed it, I would be Beyonce, minus the elevator incident, because I wouldn’t have a sister to kick my man. Unfortunately, even with no Solange in the Geek’s household, I never followed through on my resolutions, not even until the end of January. And, that would be my reply to the age-old statement of having the same number of hours with Beyonce.

Happy New Year

You have as many hours in a day as Beyonce

Last year, I changed my approach; I chose only one fun resolution, to wear more lipstick. And I did it, with many instagram pictures of my lips in 2014 as a proof. There was only a problem with this resolution, it didn’t give a lasting positive result. At the end of the year, I was left with six half used lipsticks, two of them were in the same colors, without lingering happiness as a byproduct.

This year, after reading one of the blog that gave an advice to stick with only one to three resolutions each year, I came with three goals instead. To WRITE. To write more, everyday, in many forms. To LEARN. To educate myself with something interesting and fun, maybe pick [dt_divider style=”thin” /]up a language or coding. To MOVE. I moved back to my parents’ for a reason, to migrate to a new country, which need to happen this year before they kick me out disgracefully.

The thing is, other than these three goals, I also have to come up with a new hobby. As I need it for a show and tell about it in April for the Glitter Geek Project with the BFF. I have been thinking what can my new productive hobby be? Something that I will be proud to show off in three months from now. I collect stamps, but it will portray me as a 70 year old man trapped in a hot body and is a rather passive hobby. I do watch a lot of SCANDAL, I can recite the sexy phone calls between the president and Liv, word by word. Is it something I am proud of? Maybe. Is it something my BFF can stomach? I don’t think so.

I need ideas for a hobby, you guys. Something simple, easy enough to multitask between watching TV and doing it; not time consuming and doesn’t require me to go out, because I already have an outdoor hobby, it’s called girls’ night out.

Have you ever considered taking a new hobby, instead of a habit, on a new year? If yes, what’s it? If not, would you? Because it might be fun!

  • I like your approach to new year’s resolutions. Very simple but productive. I don’t know what new hobby I would choose though. I haven’t picked up a new hobby in awhile.

Thank you Tracy. Yeah, we kinda neglect hobby no once we get older.

  • I love this. I’m all about goals instead of resolutions…it makes it way more positive. A new hobby? Gosh, that is kinda hard! Cooking? Maybe learn and take up canning or some special kind of food prep? Make a garden? Are you crafty? Could you learn to knit or something? That is not my jam, but people love it. 😉

    • Foreign Geek

Yes so true! Btw, I am not crafty, knitting is definitely not my cup of tea, especially since I live in a tropical country 😉 but cooking seems like a good idea Sarah. I enjoy eating a lot and when April comes hopefully I have mastered a dish.

  • I can’t wait for your Beyonce post! I really hate that quote, so I’m interested in what you have to say about it.
Hmm a new hobby. I started improv a while back after a bad breakup. It was really good for me!

    • Foreign Geek

Hahahaha.. High5 Charlotte, I am tired of it as well! Improv seems like a lot of work for me but I am glad it work great for you 🙂

Weeell, if you count running regularly as a hobby, that might be it! Unless a hobby is supposed to be a good thing, a pleasant one you’re looking forward to, right? Anyway yeah, it’s running. And writing, I also plan to write more in 2015. I have some other little things to stick to, and I’ll be sharing them soon on the blog. By the way, I looove your lipstick resolution! Can I steal it? 🙂

Hmm running seems like a beneficial hobby for myself, the thing is I have to come up with something to present to my bestfriend three months from now 🙂 Yay for more writing! Please do adopt the lipstick resolution, it’s fun and gives you a valid excuse to buy more lipstick, win win. I look forward to read the other things in your blog.

  • Gaining a hobby is something I was really considering for 2015 – it would feel productive and I’d gain something important out of it too. Even though it’s three days into the new year I may still have to brainstorm and come up with something.

Also that Beyonce quote…no thank you. I’m so glad others agree.

Hi Kati, thanks for dropping by. Do let me know if you come up with an idea. And yes, I am like enough already with that quote.

  • Happy new year, Wina!

Gaining a new habit (like learning to focus *cough*) is really important for me this year. Getting a new hobby? Gal, you have spark new light bulb in my life. This area is definitely something to think about seriously.

    • Foreign Geek

Yay! Let me know if you come up with something, I would love to know!

  • I really like this idea! I love the idea of coming up with a new hobby and I really love your goals for this year! I need to write and move more too!

  • I adore lipstick. I got super into it in 2014 too 🙂

My goal for 2015 is to saaaaaaave! Because money management is an important skill.

    • Foreign Geek

Agreed Manda. I was just telling my BF the same thing yesterday (how I wish I had saved more money in the past years).

  • I love your goals for this year — I think I need to add them to mine! I’m always looking for ways to improve myself and learn new stuff. You should take up calligraphy with me! 😉 That’s what I’m trying to learn this year!

  • ha i love the lipstick resolution! and i love the learning resolution even more! some easy hobby ideas: collaging, knitting, stitching, colouring with crayon, yoga, photography (or just instagram), calligraphy, puzzle-doing, drawing, tarot-reading, friendship bracelet-making, instrument-playing…hopefully something will work for you 😉
